Firefighters rescued a man who became trapped in his car after a Wednesday evening crash southeast of Santa Rosa.

Bennett Valley firefighters were called to a two-car collision in the 5000 block of Bennett Valley Road around 7:18 p.m.

They arrived to find a pickup truck blocking the two-lane road and a Honda sedan in a nearby ditch, said Andrew Tognozzi, an engineer with the fire department.

The driver of the Honda, a middle-aged man with moderate injuries whose identity was not immediately available, was pinned because the car had come to rest in a way that made it impossible to open his door, Tognozzi said.

Firefighters pried open the passenger side door, which had been damaged in the crash, and removed the man, who was transported to a local hospital, Tognozzi said.

The road was closed during the rescue but reopened after firefighters used a winch to clear the pickup from the road. Further details about the crash, including the driver’s condition, were not immediately available.
