Korbel Natural will be uncorked at the Inaugural Luncheon Friday in Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol, following the public swearing-in ceremony.

The Korbel Natural appears to be an apolitical pick, considering it was served at the last eight inaugurations, starting with President Reagan’s second inauguration in 1985 and through President Obama’s second inauguration in 2013.

Margie Healy, spokeswoman for Korbel Champagne Cellars, based in Guerneville, said “I’m sure Korbel was chosen because of our history … our 135-year heritage has allowed us to play a role in America’s greatest traditions and celebrations both large and small.”

The French sometimes take issue with Korbel’s use of the word “champagne” in its bottlings, but here’s the reason Korbel is on solid legal grounds. Korbel relies on a provision under U.S. law to call its bottlings California Champagne or Russian River Valley Champagne. Typically the term Champagne is reserved for sparkling wine coming from the Champagne region of France.
