Congresssmen for Sonoma County split on plans to attend Donald Trump's inauguration

Rep. Mike Thompson is attending the inauguration out of respect for the peaceful transition of power. Rep. Jared Huffman is spending time doing 'positive things' on the North Coast.|

“I think it’s very important that we recognize the peaceful transition of power. This is a pretty rare occasion in the world. We lead the world in this regard. I’m going back to celebrate the presidency, not the president, and to celebrate the peaceful transition of power.” -Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena. Thompson is also attending the Women’s March Napa Valley on Saturday.

“There is nothing ordinary about this inauguration or the man that will be sworn-in as our next president. I do accept the election results and support the peaceful transfer of power, but it is abundantly clear to me that with Donald Trump as our president, the United States is entering a dark and very dangerous political chapter. I will do everything I can to limit the damage and the duration of this chapter, and I believe we can get through it. But I will not sit passively and politely applaud as it begins.” - Rep. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael.
