A Windsor man suffered serious injuries Tuesday night after being hit by a car while crossing a city street on his way to a health club, according to Windsor police.

Pedro Alvarez Martinez, 22, was in a crosswalk as he crossed Old Redwood Highway at Third Street at 6:45 p.m., heading to a nearby gym when he was struck by a passing Dodge pickup, said Windsor Sgt. Andy Cash.

Driver Hector Hernandez, 59, of Windsor was headed south, Cash said.

Martinez, who wore dark clothing and headphones, had almost made it across when he was hit. The driver told investigators he didn’t see the man, notice the crosswalk or any flashing lights signifying the crosswalk was in use.

Multiple witnesses told investigators the button-activated flashing lights on either end of the crosswalk were working, Cash said. The crosswalk is temporary, set up in the last several months as part of changes in that stretch of Old Redwood Highway due to construction.

The accident remained under investigation Wednesday. An evaluation of skid marks indicated the driver wasn’t speeding and alcohol or drugs weren’t believed to be factors, Cash said.

Martinez was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment and later released. Wednesday morning firefighters were called to his home due to further medical issues and the man was returned to the hospital, Cash said.
