A 49-year-old woman in a crosswalk was struck and killed in a vehicle collision early Tuesday morning in Santa Rosa while the skies were still dark and as rain poured down.

The driver said he didn’t see Rosa Montero Torres Alcala of Santa Rosa about 5:35 a.m. walking in the marked crossing on West Steele Lane at Apple Valley Lane until it was too late to avoid her on the rain-slickened roads, Santa Rosa Sgt. Summer Black said.

Alcala was unresponsive and had significant injuries when police and emergency responders arrived, Black said.

Driver Aaron Celovsky, 33, of Santa Rosa had called 911 immediately after impact. He had been heading east on West Steele Lane in a white 2014 Chevrolet pickup truck. Alcala was walking south in the crosswalk at Apple Valley Lane.

“Celovsky did not initially see Alcala and could not avoid colliding with her,” Black said.

The investigation closed West Steele Lane for nearly five hours. The road reopened about noon.
