A Virginia man was reportedly in grave condition Tuesday following a crash during the weekend on a rural Mendocino County highway.

Akiva Demarinis, 28, of Great Falls, Virginia crashed Sunday afternoon while heading west on Highway 128 in a Ford Mustang. About five miles from Highway 1 he ran off the two-lane highway at a high rate of speed, according to the Highway Patrol.

The car smashed against a tree and Demarinis suffered major injuries. Demarinis, who was alone in the car, was flown by medical helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and apparently was transferred to another hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman Tuesday said he was no longer at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. A highway patrol spokesman Tuesday said officers were told the man was hospitalized and on life support.

Highway 128 connects Cloverdale with the Mendocino coast south of Albion.
