A Virginia man has died from his injuries following a crash last weekend near the Mendocino County coast.

Akiva Demarinis, 28, of Great Falls, Virginia was taken off of life support on Thursday, the CHP said. The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office on Friday reported the man had died.

He’d been at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital since Sunday afternoon’s crash on Highway 128 near Highway 1, according to the CHP.

Demarinis, driving a Ford Mustang, had been headed toward the coast when he drove off the rural highway. His black Mustang with gold stripes smashed against a tree, crushing the vehicle and trapping the driver. The unconscious man was freed by firefighters and flown to the Santa Rosa trauma center.

CHP officers suspected he’d been speeding at the time of the crash.

Highway 128 connects Cloverdale with the Mendocino coast south of Albion.
