Santa Rosa man injured in bicycle crash

Police say a Santa Rosa man was seriously injured on his bicycle Thursday night when he veered into the path of an oncoming passenger van on Farmers Lane.

Luis Garcia, 39, suffered severe head trauma and facial injuries in the 9:20 p.m. crash near Vallejo Street, authorities said.

He was reported in critical condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Friday morning, according to a hospital spokewoman.

Police believe Garcia had been drinking before he headed down Farmers Lane, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, authorities said.

He then swerved into the path of the northbound van as it approached the Vallejo Street intersection between Hoen Avenue and Highway 12, police said.

The driver of the van has been identified as Santa Rosa resident Jay Howell, 46.

Police ask that any witnesses to the collision call Officer Matthew Sanchez at (707) 543-3600.
