Sonoma County sees first heat wave of the year

Sonoma County residents have been feeling some heat lately, with temperatures climbing into the 90s for the first time since October.

Sunday brought a high of 81 and then Monday hit 90. Tuesday was a record-tying high of 91. The only other time it was as hot on the second day of May was back in 1990, when Santa Rosans faced a similar heat wave that set record highs for both May 2 and May 3, at 91 and 92 degrees, respectively.

Today is expected to be just as hot, according to the National Weather Service, with the heat not breaking until Thursday.

The NWS issued an advisory about the heat, asking people to remain mindful about not leaving children or pets in hot cars.

“With it being this warm, we’re trying to encourage people to take all the heat precautions that they need to,” said Roger Gass, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.

With the high-pressure system that’s bringing the heat breakup, Thursday’s high is expected to reach the upper 70s in Santa Rosa, with temperatures through the weekend peaking in the low 70s.

The cooler weather will bring increased cloudiness and a slight chance of rain Saturday and Sunday.
