Fire destroyed a home on River Road east of Cloverdale and spread to nearly 10 acres Wednesday evening before firefighters got a handle on it.

The blaze was reported at 5:09 p.m. in the 42000 block of the River Road and spread to surrounding grassy woodlands.

By 9 p.m., crews had halted the fire’s forward progress were getting close to having it fully contained, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Mark Gradek said.

The fire spread to the woodland area when gusty winds carried embers from the property across Geysers Road, Gradek said.

A total of 13 engine companies and 84 firefighters were involved in the firefighting effort, according to Cal Fire.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation. Damage to the home was estimated at $200,000.
