The CHP is investigating a fatal traffic accident early Sunday morning on Highway 12 in Sonoma Valley.

Sgt. Jason Bahlman said the accident occurred about 4 a.m. just west of Dunbar Road when an unidentified driver, for unknown reasons, lost control a vehicle and left the roadway. The car rolled several times through a grass field and eventually caught fire, he said.

According to the CHP’s traffic website, the incident was first reported as a brush fire at 4:06 a.m. Two minutes later dispatchers said the incident was also a traffic collision and the car was “fully engulfed” in flames.

“When fire arrived they found a single occupant in the driver seat,” Bahlman said.

Bahlman said information about the victim could not be released because officers are in the process of notifying family members. He said the exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
