A woman was killed and a teenage girl wounded shortly before dawn Sunday when someone peppered their crowded Mendocino Coast house with bullets as they slept, then fled into the darkness, authorities said.

The 5:43 a.m. shooting took place outside Manchester in the 500 block of Rancheria Road, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Lt. Shannon Barney said in a statement. Numerous people were sleeping when an unknown assailant sprayed the house with bullets from the exterior, Barney said.

A 32-year-old woman was unresponsive by the time authorities arrived and died at the home. Her name was not released Sunday night.

A 15-year-old girl was wounded but alert, Barney said. She was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for a gunshot wound and released. Investigators did not disclose her name or her relationship to the dead woman.

No one else in the home was struck, Barney said.

A vehicle was heard leaving the area “in a rapid manner,” Barney said. No further information was available Sunday night.

The shooting was being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office and criminalists from the California Department of Justice Criminal Laboratory in Eureka.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the attack to contact the sheriff’s communications center at 707-463-4086 or the office’s tip line at 707-234-2100.
