Two Sacramento-area fishermen in the ocean off Bodega Head needed rescuing Sunday when their canoe filled with water and they had to crawl onto rocks to await help.

Several agencies responded to a call about 9 a.m. and the two were plucked by the Sonoma County sheriff’s helicopter and carried to the top of the iconic Bodega Bay bluff. They declined medical attention, according to fire officials.

The men reportedly went out in the canoe with fishing gear, wearing life jackets and fishing waders. They’d not gotten beyond the breakwater when waves swamped the canoe and they had to abandon it, said sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Crum.

As water filled their fishing boots they struggled to stay afloat and made it to nearby rocks.

Bodega Bay Fire, state parks and the U.S. Coast Guard responded along with the Sheriff’s Office.
