CASTROVILLE - Authorities say a 12-year-old male student was arrested for stabbing a fellow student with a kitchen knife at a California middle school.

Monterey County Sheriff Cmdr. Joseph Banuelos says the injured boy was flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose. School officials say the boy is in stable condition at a hospital.

Banuelos tells the Monterey Herald deputies were called Monday to Castroville Middle School.

He says the assailant was tackled from behind by a school staff member.

Banuelos says other people could've been injured if it wasn't for the fast thinking action by the school staffer who subdued him.

The accused attacker could be facing assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder charges. His name has not been released.
