A Ukiah man was driving south on Highway 101 early Monday near Hopland when he hit a horse.

Immediately afterward, he hit another.

The 2:40 a.m. collisions occurred north of Nelson Ranch Road. The impact catapulted the first horse 30 to 40 feet, according to the CHP. The second flew on top of Bob Ford’s 2003 BMW coupe, crushing the roof before falling off, Hopland volunteer Battalion Chief Ron Roysum said.

The first horse died from the impact, and the second had to be shot.

Ford, 65, was able to escape from the car. Ukiah paramedics treated him and took him to Ukiah Valley Medical Center with moderate injuries.
