Windsor power outage stems from big rig crash into pole

A big rig that knocked over a utility pole near Windsor left about 20 households in the dark until midnight Thursday.|

An a semi-truck hauling a trailer struck a utility pole outside Windsor on Thursday, cutting power to nearly 100 households for the afternoon.

Electricity was restored by evening to all but 20 customers, who were expected to be without lights until about midnight, PG&E said.

Crews were able to restore some power by switching connections, company spokeswoman Deanna Contreras said.

But fixing the rest was contingent on replacing a power pole, lines and other equipment knocked to the ground by the big rig when it struck the pole at Mark West Station and Starr roads west of Windsor about 3:15 p.m., Contreras said.

The crash caused sparking that ignited a small fire in some trees, but it did not spread, emergency responders said.

No one was injured, the CHP said.

Contreras said passersby who come upon downed utility lines should always err on the side of caution and assume they are energized.

Stay away and call 911, she said.
