Firefighters made significant progress Thursday night on a more than 50-acre grass fire northwest of Boonville in Mendocino County.

The fire was reported at 3:11 p.m. on the north side of Highway 128 between County Road 150 B and Peachland Road, said Cal Fire Captain Jim Horton. The area is just north of Anderson Valley Elementary School.

Fire crews had 70 percent containment of the blaze as of 9 p.m., Horton said. Air tankers had greatly helped in dousing water on the wildfire, he added.

The fire is located in the Anderson Valley, which has numerous vineyards along the highway. No structures have been reported damaged, Horton said.

Cal Fire, the Anderson Valley Fire Department and the Redwood Coast Fire Protection District, and the Elk Volunteer Fire Department were all on the scene of the blaze, Horton said.
