Police: No threat at Santa Rosa middle school after report of a person with a gun

Authorities found no threat at the Hilliard Comstock Middle School Friday afternoon after a report of a person there with a gun during a school dance prompted Santa Rosa police officers to put the school on lockdown and search the campus, police said in a statement.

Officers were called to the campus at about 4:50 p.m. They determined the school off West Steele Lane was safe after the search turned up no suspects and no one interviewed by police could say they saw someone with a gun, Santa Rosa Officer Marcus Sprague said.

“Upon further investigation, we learned no one had actually seen a person with a gun,” Sprague said. “There’s not much more to do other than to make sure everyone understands what happened and goes to school on Monday.”

In a press release Friday evening, police said a former student went to the school to meet some friends when an “unknown juvenile” began posting on social media claiming the former student had a gun. The former student had not brought a gun to campus, and he replied to the post saying he was not armed and went home as soon as he learned about the social media post, police said. They are not releasing the names of anyone involved, because they are all juveniles.

Sprague did not know how many people were on campus at the time of the report. Classes end at the middle school at 2:45 p.m. , according to the school’s website.
