A month for Pomo events, exhibits

This October marks Sebastopol’s fifth annual Pomo Honoring Month, marked locally with a few events.|

This October marks Sebastopol’s fifth annual Pomo Honoring Month, presented by the Pomo Project, an organization that encourages greater understanding of local Native American history and culture.

Events and exhibits scheduled for the rest of the month, and beyond, include:

“Hinth’el Gaahnula (Talking Indian): A Narrative History of Clear Lake Pomo through 1900,” documentary film. 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19. French Garden Restaurant, 8050 Bodega Ave., Sebastopol. 824-2030.

“Pomo Ancesters and Neighbors,” an exhibit of art by Johnny Clay, Christine Cobaugh, Stella Mora, Sandy Eastoak, Mike Shoys and Eric Wilder. Runs through Saturday, Oct. 25, with a closing reception on the last day 2-5 p.m. Risk Press Gallery, 7345 Healdsburg Ave., Sebastopol. 829-1224.

“The Tragedy of American Indian Boarding Schools,” a presentation by Pomo rights activist Molin Malicay. 4 p.m. Oct. 26. French Garden Restaurant, 8050 Bodega Ave., Sebastopol. 824-2030.

“Batikletcawi Was Here: Honoring the First Ancestors,” an art and history exhibit including artifacts from Sonoma State University, excerpts from talks by Vana Lawson, Greg Sarris and Gloria Armstrong, and art by Christine Cobaugh and Sandy Eastoak. Runs 1-4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays until Dec. 28. West County Museum, 261 S. Main St., Sebastopol. 829-6711.
