Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out restaurant wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week’s picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

Chandon, NV California Blanc de Noirs, 13 percent alcohol, $22. A tasty sparkler that’s refreshing. What gives this bubbly an edge is its layered flavors coupled with a creamy texture. Red fruit – strawberry and cherry – is trumped up while blackberry is just a whisper, but it works. Nice mousse. Who needs a special occasion to uncork this bubbly? The quality for the price makes it an everyday option.

Medlock Ames, 2013 Lower Slope, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County Chardonnay, 13.9 percent, $40. A chardonnay lover’s chardonnay. It’s rich, with a lush texture, yet it manages to be balanced with great minerality and crisp acidity. Not an easy trick. Tasty notes of apricot and toast in the mix. Out of the park.

Dutton Goldfield, 2012 Cherry Ridge Vineyard, Dutton Ranch, Russian River Valley, Syrah, 13.5 percent, $50. A syrah with personality. What sets it apart is that it’s meaty, with concentrated cherry fruit and kiss of white pepper. Impressive.

Talbott, 2012 Diamond T. Vineyard Chardonnay, 14.5 percent, $52. This lush chardonnay wins you over with its juicy, rich fruit and tasty note of vanilla bean. Supple. Lingering finish. A bottle of decadence.

Hanna, 2012 Bismark Mountain Vineyard, Sonoma Valley, Zinfandel,16 percent, $62. This zin has a great range of flavors – raspberry, sage and a hint of vanilla. Milder than the brash zins on the market, this style is a welcome addition. It has ripe tannins, a seamless texture and a supple finish. Lovely.
