Put it in your pipe and smoke it

Once a fringe endeavor, more and more glass artists are getting into the 'functional art' of smoking pipes.|

If you're smelling something funny today, chances are it isn't a skunk.

April 20, or 'Weed Day,' unofficially celebrates the culture of cannabis each year on a date that has significance for tokers. Once a fringe holiday, 4/20 has been gaining mainstream attention as the number of states that have either legalized or are poised to legalize medical or recreational marijuana.

And where there's smoking, there's probably a huddle around a bong. Whether for cannabis or tobacco, blown glass pipes both big and small have always been a creative part of smoking culture. But the legitimacy and artistic quality of these 'functional' glass pieces has exploded in recent years. High quality works by well-known artists like Buck Darby and Dosa Art Glass can command anywhere from $200 to a whopping $60,000 for complex pieces.

We stopped at Peacepipe Smoke Shop in Santa Rosa to check out some of the trippiest works in the county, in celebration of 420. Here's a sampling of glass pieces that caught our eye.

Wondering what exactly 420 stands for? Legends range from a secret meeting time for Marin County teens looking for a mysterious weed patch in the early 1970s to scanner codes for police calls (420). Regardless, it's been adopted as an insider term for cannabis smoking.
