Blowing giant bubbles in the name of science? Light shows in service to chemistry and physics?

Santa Rosa Junior College’s Day Under the Oaks is like a cross-cultural festival of fun learning.

The 33rd annual spring open house this Sunday, May 3, includes more than 20 demonstrations and performances of everything from hula and hip hop to Polynesian, rhythm and blues and a traditional Chinese lion parade.

New this year is a Giant Bubble Blowing Contest and a 3K fun run for all ages at Bailey Field starting at 9 a.m. Registration is $30.

Day Under the Oaks is an opportunity to show off the campus and all its many programs and activities not just to prospective students but the community at large, with things like a Planetarium show and cooking demonstrations as well as a Native American Spring Celebration with arts, crafts, dancing and Native American food. There will also be 175 booths, food trucks, wheelchair basketball, a sustainability village and a jumpy house for kids.

Festivities run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 1501 Mendocino Avenue, Santa Rosa. Admission and parking is free for the day. For information visit santarosa.edu/about_srjc/day-under-the-oaks.
