This week's wine picks

Favorites include a tasty zin from Amador County and a polished cab made a little closer to home.|

Press Democrat wine writer Peg Melnik scopes out restaurant wine lists around the North Bay, looking for good value and the occasional splurge. This week’s picks (prices are retail; restaurant markup varies):

Easton, 2013 Amador County Zinfandel, 14.5 percent alcohol, $18. This is a tasty zin with a seamless blend of cherry and blackberry fruit, coupled with the right dose of spice. The creamy texture and touch of toast makes it particularly appealing for wine drinkers across the board.

Sbragia, Gino’s Zinfandel, 2012 Dry Creek Valley, 15.1 percent, $34. A bright zin brimming with high-toned red fruit – strawberry and currant. The fruit upstages the spice, but that’s why it’s such a great food wine. Crisp acidity. Ripe tannins. Lingering finish. A smart buy.

Caravan, 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5 percent, $48. A polished cab with a seamless texture. Complex, with layered flavors of bold blackberry, cedar and vanilla. Ripe tannins. Spicy finish. Impressive.

Amoureux, 2011 Justi Creek Vineyards, Lasseter Family Winery Red Blend, 14.8 percent, $54. This malbec-based blend is supple but bold with a gorgeous layering of flavors. Notes of blueberry, vanilla and clove. Ripe tannins. Lush texture. Nice length. Knockout.

Williams Selyem, 2012 Vista Verde Vineyard, San Benito County Pinot Noir, 13.8 percent, $58. A pinot noir with a winning combination - great complexity and a lush texture. Aromas and flavors of raspberry, mocha and mineral. Long finish. Striking.
