NOVATO: Which do you prefer, tea or wine?

You can sip both together in the Republic of Tea’s Sonoma Teas, a new line of herbal teas made from chardonnay, cabernet and rosé grape skins.

The brainchild of Kendall-Jackson Executive Chef Justin Wangler, the teas are made from wine grape skins sourced from WholeVine, which manufactures a line of sustainable, all-natural foods from vineyard byproducts. The company was founded by Barbara Banke of Kendall-Jackson Family Estates and partner Peggy Furth.

For the Sonoma Teas collection, the wine grape skins are infused with complementary flavors: the chardonnay offers notes of pineapple and sweet peach; the rosé is married with ripe strawberries and crisp apples; and the cabernet is infused with sweet oranges and black currants.

The line also includes a Mulled Zin Hot Tea, a blend of zinfandel grape skins and warm spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cloves and orange zest.

The Sonoma Teas collection comes packaged in steel tins, each containing six pouches of tea that produce six quarts, or 24 servings. They are available at republicoftea.com for $7.99 each. The Mulled Zin Hot Tea will be available in September.

The Republic of Tea, headquartered in Novato, was founded in 1992 and offers a selection of the high-quality black and herbal teas.
