Spinster Sisters chef Liza Hinman competes in Breakfast Battle

Liza Hinman of Spinster Sisters shared her Santa Rosa-centric breakfast recipe for a national contest sponsored by Thomas' English Muffin.|

Liza Hinman, chef/owner of The Spinster Sisters in Santa Rosa, is competing in the national 'Hometown Breakfast Battle,' an online competition featuring Thomas' iconic English Muffins or Bagels.

The contest, which honors National Breakfast Month and the 135th anniversary of the Thomas brand, showcases 135 chefs from across the country, who are fighting to receive most votes for their dish.

For the contest, Hinman developed The Santa Rosa Sandwich, a hearty entree featuring kale, local eggs, Humboldt Fog goat cheese, bacon from the Sonoma County Meat Company and a Cabernet Ketchup on a Sourdough English Muffin. For the length of the contest, the sandwich is running as a special at The Spinster Sisters, with a side of fingerling hash.

'I grew up with Thomas' English Muffins always in the bread drawer, so I felt like I knew the product well,' Hinman said. 'My inspiration is, of course, the bounty of Sonoma County and California Wine Country.'

To vote for The Santa Rosa Sandwich, go to thomasbreakfastbattle.com, where you can also find the recipe if you want to try it at home. Voting continues through Sept. 28, when the contest will narrow the chefs down to the top 16.

Other Bay Area chefs competing in the contest include Bernardo Ayala of Napa Valley Bistro in Napa, who dreamed up a Dungeness Crab Huevos Rancheros; and James LaLonde from Bocadillos in San Francisco, who came up with Cured Salmon with Green Goddess and Poached Eggs on Sourdough English Muffins.
