Five wines to pair with the evening news

Well-crafted wines will buoy your spirits, no matter what a newscaster broadcasts.|

No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, no matter if you live in a red state or a blue state, this we can all agree upon: there’s high drama on the news, night after night. If you’re an everyday wine drinker, you’ve already uncorked your dinner bottle, so why not pair a glass with the evening news? Beautifully crafted wines, like the ones in our lineup, will lift your spirits during these turbulent times.

Sea Smoke, 2014 Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay, 14.5%, $85. This is a blousy chardonnay with a supple texture. Notes of ripe apple, melon and brioche. The acid keeps the rich flavors in check, but make no mistake, this chardonnay is weighted to decadence. Lovers of lush chardonnays will go for this in a big way.

Martin Ray Vineyards, 2016 Sonoma County Chardonnay, 13.8%, $20. This is a budget-wise chardonnay that’s well crafted. Notes of apple, melon and mineral. Seamless texture. Smart.

Longboard, 2013 Russian River Valley, Sonoma County Syrah, 14.5%, $30. What makes this a standout is its generous fruit coupled with its smoky flavors. Weighted to black fruit. Firm tannins. Impressive.

Marimar Estate, 2014 Christina Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, 14.5%, $65. This is a lovely pinot noir with cherry, herbs and spice. It’s a touch earthy and it really works.

Goldeneye, 2014 Confluence Vineyard, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, 13.9%, $84. This is rock star - a commingling of high-toned fruit with crisp acid. High-toned Bing cherry meets mineral. This bottling is off-the-charts good.
