The two things that grabbed my attention when looking through this listing were the architecture – which seemed better suited to South Carolina than California – and the use of the term ‘gentleman’s vineyard’. While this house is technically Greek Revival, these were the homes most often found on the larger estates from the 1840s onwards in the South; large, showy, and ultimately meant to signify wealth.

A gentleman’s vineyard is an old way of referring to a rich man’s hobby; something quaint that’s done because he fancies doing it – not because he needs to. It’s basically what we call now a ‘hobby’ or ’boutique’ vineyard, but using the former phrasing does give a quick nod to the fact that this is a Southern style manse.

Okay, all these historical notes aside, this estate is stunning. Located on over 20+ acres with a year-round creek and in close proximity to Annadel, Jack London, and Sugar Loaf State Parks, you almost don’t need the pool. Or the wood floors. Or the pizza oven (oh wait, no, you definitely need the pizza oven. Scroll through the gallery if you’re ready to see what’s been tucked away in the forests of Kenwood…
