This Cinderella story of historic home makeovers received plenty of attention in recent years when owners Mark Goff and Phillip Engel decided to take on the seemingly insurmountable task of transforming this historic home themselves.

The house, built in 1871 by town blacksmith John Marshall as a gift for his young bride, has hit the market for $5.5 million after five years of rehab work and buckets of sweat equity.

When Goff and Engel purchased the Italianate Greek Revival home in 2009, the property was so sad that Press Democrat’s Meg McConahey remarked that the saggy front bay windows  appeared to be “frowning with despair”.

I have been following this home for years, reading the trials and tribulations of the owners on their blog 227northstreet.com. It is a truly inspiring tale of the ultimate fixer upper.
