Gearhead: Next gen waders a major upgrade

The days of sweaty, bulky, heavy waders are behind us with new designs tailored for both men and women.|

Fishing waders used to be clumsy-looking and baggy, fit awkwardly, and - since they offered no breathability - left anglers feeling sweaty and uncomfortable. Old-style rubber and canvas waders are still popular, but today you can also buy waders fashioned from tough, lightweight and breathable materials.

Redington, a fishing products company based in the Pacific Northwest, offers a series of next-generation waders. The highly-rated Sonic-Pro is made from extremely durable, waterproof and breathable DWR-coated material (100 percent nylon). Seams are welded and double-taped, and both seat and lower legs are reinforced. Multiple pockets - including a mesh pocket and hyplon dock with multiple attachment points - offer plenty of space for gear, including fly boxes.

A full, center-front Ryrie Storm waterproof zipper makes it easy to take the waders on and off. They're easy to adjust, the built-in belt secures them against your body, and, even though the material is lightweight, they'll keep you warm in cold water. You'll also appreciate the fleece-lined hand warmer pocket and ergonomic neoprene booties.

Not least, these waders look great, with two contrasting colors in a zippy design.

The Sonic-Pro has separate designs for men and women. $299. www.redington.com

In Sonoma County, Redington's products are carried by Dick's Sporting Goods (Petaluma) and Outdoor Pro Shop (Cotati).
