SANTA ROSA

Expert talk on Monarch butterflies

Suzanne Clarke, a Sonoma County Master Gardener, will give a free talk Oct. 18 on the benefits of luring Monarch Butterflies to your garden. Clarke will urge people to plant natives to reduce the use of pesticides and also create a safe haven for these butterflies, which have declined in numbers over the past 35 years. She will explain the life cycle of the Monarch and what the home gardener can do to help their survival. Guests will learn how to make a farm enabling them to observe the metamorphosis of the caterpillar into a chrysalis and then into a butterfly. Clarke has gardened in Germany, Taiwan, England, Zimbabwe, as well as in the United States. The Santa Rosa Garden Club is hosting the meeting. 1 p.m., Luther Burbank Art and Garden Center, 2050 Yulupa, Santa Rosa. For more information, email gardenclubevents@yahoo.com.
