A Santa Rosa man who shot at cars after his wife and a locksmith tried to enter his Fountaingrove home was sentenced to 90 days in jail and ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution to police responders.

James Carl Provost, 43, was sentenced Monday for the Oct. 9 domestic dispute on Sedgemoore Drive that drew a response from the SWAT team and ended after an 11-hour standoff.

Provost, who was arrested in a neighbor’s backyard, initially was charged with six felonies and faced a potential prison sentence. But he was allowed to plead no contest to a single count of shooting into an unoccupied vehicle in exchange for waiving his trial rights. Prosecutors dropped the remaining counts.

Judge Lawrence Antolini sentenced him to 90 days in jail, rejecting a recommendation from probation officials for a 10-month sentence. He will be allowed to serve his time on work release or electronic home confinement.

“I think it’s an appropriate resolution,” said his lawyer, Stephen Turer.
