When the days grow shorter, what’s the best way to pamper the seeds in your garden? This free workshop Aug. 25, put on by the Sonoma Master Gardeners, will teach you how to prep seeds for both fall and early spring veggies. Needlework anyone?

The Redwood Stitchers welcome fellow enthusiasts to come to its annual open house Sept. 12 at the Luther Burbank Art & Garden Center. There will be an exhibit of a wide range of members’ needlework, featuring cross stitch, needlepoint and embroidery. Admission is free and complimentary refreshments will be served. At 1 p.m. Kathleen Johnson will teach a free class in beginning cross stitch. Class in Iris care

Are your irises thriving? If not, now through October is a good time to rejuvenate them. The Russian River Rose Company is offering iris classes today and Sunday. The garden and nursery will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with hundreds of roses, irises, and perennials for sale. Create a fire resistant home and landscape

Before fire strikes, protect your property with information gleaned from this Aug. 24 workshop. Pre-fire activities can help you prevent potential problems given the realities of fires in our region, both in the wildlands and urban areas. Bonsai exhibition

A forest of tiny trees will materialize in the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building Aug. 25 and 26 for the Redwood Empire Bonsai Society’s annual exhibition.

More than 200 bonsai will be on display, the largest exhibition of its kind in the U.S., according to members.

Sensei or teacher Kathy Shaner, who trained in Japan, will give demonstrations at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. both days. Shaner trained in Japan and was the first woman and non-Japanese citizen to be certified by the Nippon Bonsai Association as a professional bonsai artist and instructor. 1351 Maple Ave., Santa Rosa.
