Arborist Don Hourigan will field questions about trees that have weathered the firestorm during a free pruning class on Jan. 13. Today Gina Hitchcock will share her expertise in how to cultivate a garden that attracts a swarm of pollinators. This free class is put on by the Sonoma County Master Gardeners. 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The Healdsburg Regional Library, 139 Piper St.

SANTA ROSA: Rose Pruning Workshop

The Redwood Empire Rose Society will hold a free pruning workshop for the public on Jan. 13 in their own rose garden at 2050 Yulupa Ave in Santa Rosa. People are encouraged to bring their own pruners, gloves and a notebook. Hot beverages and treats will be served. 9 am to 12:30 p.m.

Outfitting yourself with the proper tools for pruning roses is just one of the topics renowned rosarian Jim Lang will cover in a free class Jan. 13. The master gardener will also cover the basics of pruning for the uninitiated. 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Cloverdale Library, 401 N. Cloverdale Blvd.

For those curious about the living nature of soil, this free talk on Jan. 20 is for you. It will cover soil health, composting and carbon sequestration. 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., Petaluma Library, 100 Fairgrounds Drive.

The Windsor Garden Club is hosting harvesttable.com garden writer Steve Albert Jan. 16. He will cover how to design a three-season food garden for 2018. 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Windsor Senior Center, 9231 Foxwood Drive.
