Padecky and his work

EDITOR: Each day I read The Press Democrat, and being a sports nut, I open that section first. But really the first thing I look for is that head shot of a smiling/grinning Bob Padecky. If I saw him, I knew I was going to read a thoughtful sports-related column with a touch of humor and a striking metaphor or two. When I didn't see his picture, I would always be a little bummed.

Fortunately, I have witnessed Bob in person interviewing students I have coached. I saw the attention and care he took to find the most compelling way to tell a story. Even better, he once accepted an invitation to speak to my English classes about writing. I'll never forget his advice he gave my students: "If you love what you do, you will never have to work a day in your life." Bob clearly didn't "work" that much.

So I want to express my appreciation for Bob Padecky and his stellar career as a journalist with The Press Democrat. He found authenticity in an arena often filled with fakes. His willingness to do his topic justice will be sorely missed. He was the real deal. Thanks Bob.
