Lake County deputy shoots Santa Rosa man after chase

A Lake County sheriff's deputy shot a Santa Rosa man suspected of burglary after he led authorities on a chase that reached speeds of up to 100 mph and rammed a Lakeport police vehicle early Friday morning, Lake County authorities said.

James Ellis Smith of Santa Rosa was shot multiple times and flown to an undisclosed trauma center where he underwent surgery, authorities said. His condition was unavailable Friday afternoon.

The shooting occurred about 4:30 a.m., according to Lake County Chief Deputy District Attorney Richard Hinchcliff.

The incident was triggered by an alarm at a Lakeport business, Hillside Honda, according to the Lakeport Police Department.

Smith fled as a Lakeport police officer arrived, and a chase began, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies soon joined in the pursuit, which reached speeds of up to 100 mph and veered outside city limits, authorities said.

On Riggs Road, just west of Lakeport, Smith's vehicle hit a fence. Smith then put the vehicle into reverse and rammed the Lakeport police vehicle, authorities said.

A sheriff's deputy standing outside of his vehicle fired at the suspect, according to the Sheriff's Office.

No other information was available Friday.
