Police: Drunk driver abandoned car in traffic

A Rohnert Park man was arrested by police after he hit a street sign and abandoned his car in traffic, Rohnert Park police said Monday.

A preliminary test showed the man had a blood-alcohol content of 0.312 percent -#8212; almost four times the legal limit for driving.

The man had allegedly left his car at Commerce and Southwest boulevards at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday. Officers found the car in the street and no sign of a driver. They got the address for the owner from the vehicle registration and went to the man's home.

They found Anytowan Smith-Vanzandt, 25, struggling to get inside and fumbling with his house keys. He still was holding his car key, police said.

He told officers he'd been drinking at a Cotati bar prior to coming home and that his car had "stopped working" so he'd gotten a ride home from a passerby, according to the press release.

Smith-Vanzandt was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk. He was taken to Sonoma County Jail and was released after posting bail.
