Local post offices cut back hours to save money

Santa Rosa's downtown post office and three others in Sonoma County have curtailed their hours as part of an annual economic adjustment, a Postal Service official said.

The downtown office on Second Street is opening an hour later, with weekday hours from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., spokesman James Wigdel said.

Roseland's post office at 2585 Sebastopol Road is opening a half hour later, with service now from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Cotati post office at 502 East Cotati Ave. is opening a half hour later, with hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed noon to 1 p.m.

The North Bay Finance post office 1150 N. McDowell Blvd. in Petaluma shifted weekday hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The changes took effect on Saturday. The Postal Service conducts annual evaluations of each office's revenue and adjust hours accordingly, Wigdel said.

Stamp purchases account for 85 percent of all Postal Service retail transactions, which occur at about 30,000 post offices and 70,000 other outlets nationwide, including grocery stores and drug stores, he said.

The Postal Service, hampered by a continuing decline in the volume of first-class mail, reported a $5 billion net loss for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.
