Suspected drunk driver leads police on chase through Santa Rosa

Reaching speeds of 100 mph on Highway 12 heading west, a suspected drunken driver with a Santa Rosa police officer in pursuit was caught after he took the Stony Point offramp and ran from his car, according to police officials.

Santa Rosa police Sgt. Dave Boettger said Sunday's 9 p.m. pursuit ended with the arrest of Gibb Joseph Olivarez Jr., 46, of Santa Rosa.

The pursuit started when Officer Jeffrey Travers attempted to pull over an apparent reckless driver near the Sonoma County Fairgrounds.

The driver, who was on Maple Avenue, didn't stop and instead sped onto Highway 12, according to Boettger.

While leaving the highway the driver hit a concrete median barrier, damaging his car.

He then drove into the nearby Stony Point Road shopping center, drove across a sidewalk and stopped behind a business.

Officers and Sonoma County sheriff's deputies arrived to help look for the driver and he was found, still in the area.

Olivarez was arrested on suspicion of reckless evading, driving drunk, driving with a suspended license and violating his probation.

He was taken to the Sonoma County Jail.
