Sonoma County Sheriff Steve Freitas is seeking public input on how to implement a new state law that limits law enforcement agencies' use of federal holds on undocumented immigrants booked into local jails.
The law, known as the Trust Act, was approved by the state Legislature last year and takes effect this year. It gives county sheriffs discretion over enforcement of federal detainer requests, allowing them to focus resources on undocumented immigrants who have committed serious crimes.
In a statement, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said Freitas has conducted "preliminary meetings with several individuals and groups to create a temporary policy regarding his implementation of the Trust Act."
The Sheriff's Office now seeks input from "anyone in the community who may want to participate in the creation of the Sheriff's Office policy," the statement said.
Public comment will be sought during the Jan. 28 meeting of the Human Rights Commission. The 5:30 p.m. meeting will be held in the public hearing room at the Permit and Resource Management Department, 2550 Ventura Ave., Santa Rosa.
