A week after a 19-year-old reputed gang member was found fatally shot on the living room floor of a southwest Santa Rosa home, a police sergeant in charge of the investigation said there was little new information to release to the public.
But Sgt. David Linscomb said detectives have identified specific individuals they are trying to track down and question, believing they can help explain what happened to Eduardo Ramos Caballero.
A Monday post-mortem examination determined Caballero, a Santa Rosa resident known to law enforcement, died of a single gunshot wound to the head. Police say they remain uncertain if he was slain or died of a self-inflicted gunshot, or in that case, whether it was deliberate or accidental.
Another teen heard the gunshot from another room in the house, but police have not found any eyewitnesses or made any arrests.
Police did not recover any firearms, though the absence of a weapon may not be especially telling, Linscomb said.
Caballero "was involved in gangs, and the people he associated with were involved in gangs, and the fact that the gun disappeared doesn't surprise me," he said.
The Marble Street house near Stony Point and Sebastopol roads is occupied by a woman and one of her sons, but neither was home when the shooting occurred. The next day, both said they did not know the victim.
Police are still trying to determine if a second twin whose whereabouts are unknown may have known the gunshot victim or be linked to two other teens who were present when police arrived.
Caballero led police on a chase in west Santa Rosa last November before crashing into a pole and a fence, causing the vehicle to burst into flames. Police pulled him from the wreckage with injuries to his lower extremities, while a passenger was able to get out on his own.
Police described the two men as uncooperative.
