The bishop's words
EDITOR: In his own words, Bishop Robert Vasa ("Weighing pope's words," Saturday) succinctly exposes why so many in the Santa Rosa Diocese call for a change of tone; apparently, with the same urgency as Pope Francis. In describing his style of leadership, Vasa demeans "pastoral leadership" in favor of "administrative leadership."
Administrators identify with policies, numbers, regulations, committees and fundraising. They are perceived as the enforcers, and this is precisely the tone that needs to change. Enforcers breed fear and division; whereas, pastoral leaders walk with the people as humble servants and spread hope and unity.
The people of Santa Rosa want a pastoral bishop who emulates the Good Shepherd not a CEO. Bishops can hire administrators. There are many of us who wish we could choose our bishops.
