Petaluma man dies in car crash west of town

A 60-year-old Petaluma man was killed Thursday morning when he flipped his sports car while attempting to pass on a rural road, the CHP said.

The crash was reported at 10:50 a.m. on D Street, east of San Antonio Road.

A man driving a 2003 Shelby Cobra replica accelerated around the other car and lost control, running off the road and flipping end over end.

The vehicle came to rest upside down, blocking the roadway.

The man was found dead inside the topless car by emergency crews. He was wearing a lapbelt and the car had a single rollbar, Sgt. John Evans said.

The driver's identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
