Sonoma woman struck by car improving

A Sonoma woman who suffered major injuries after being hit by a car Thursday spent several days in critical condition but is doing better, her mother said Tuesday.

The woman, Martha Arias Harris, 30, was seriously injured in Sonoma not far from the downtown plaza, where she had been out for dinner and drinks with a friend and her friend's mother, said Julianna Andersen, Harris' mother.

The three were taking a taxi home, Andersen said, and a man they had apparently met at the bar was following in his car. At some point, both cars pulled into a driveway and Harris got out to talk to the man, Peter Cosgrove, 23, of Sonoma.

Over the course of the conversation, which according to the CHP was an argument, Harris was struck by Cosgrove's car as he tried to leave the driveway. He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, the CHP said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, the CHP said.

Harris suffered a traumatic brain injury, a broken jaw, broken ribs and other injuries, Andersen said. She added that Harris moved out of the intensive care unit Tuesday and is improving.
