Two men pretending to be San Jose police officers walked into a Petaluma woman's home Thursday evening, then fled when questioned by a 911 dispatcher, police said.
A 66-year-old woman on Stuart Drive had left her front door unlocked and the men apparently walked right in a little after 6 p.m., said Sgt. Ken Savano.
They identified themselves as San Jose officers, providing identification, police said. But the men were not in uniform and the identification looked suspicious to the woman, so she called 911, Savano said.
One of the men got on the phone with the dispatcher and said he was there to check the woman's welfare, police said. When the dispatcher began questioning him, he hung up and the two men fled in a white pickup truck with blue stripes near the bumper, police said.
It didn't appear anything was stolen or damaged, Savano said.
Savano urged residents to lock their doors and beware of such scams.
"It's a good opportunity to remind people that it's always OK to verify who we are," Savano added.
