Rain causes traffic troubles on local roads

Rainy weather may be contributing to an unusual number of spinouts and crashes along Highway 101 in Sonoma County Sunday, the CHP said.

The CHP received numerous reports of cars spinning out Sunday morning, particularly at onramps and offramps such as the ones at highways 12 and 101 in Santa Rosa, said Sgt. Ross Ingels.

"There's definitely an uptick in crashes, especially on those transition roads where people are breaking and turning," he said, reminding drivers to slow down and allow a safe driving distance between vehicles.

He added roads were likely slick and oily, as there's been little rain this winter to wash off accumulated oil.

In Lake and Mendocino counties, snowy conditions closed Highway 175 Sunday morning. The road was reopened by 1:30 p.m., but the Ukiah CHP advised drivers that chains are required and that the roads are still very slick.
