Hash oil explosion lands Laytonville man in jail

A Laytonville man was arrested last week on suspicion of causing an explosion in his rented room as a result of making hash oil there, Mendocino Sheriff's Capt. Greg Van Patten said.

On Friday, a landlord reported the Feb. 3 explosion, which he learned of from other tenants staying in the same Laytonville home.

Deputies responded Friday and met William Corley, 53, in his room. While there, they found a lab for creating honey oil, a concentrated form of cannabis made by extracting resins from marijuana buds with a solvent. The lab was fueled by a butane power source, Van Patten said. Deputies also found 33 small marijuana plants, three methamphetamine smoking pipes, five pounds of processed marijuana and 114 grams of honey oil, Van Patten said.

They also determined that the honey oil had caused a small explosion because of a lack of proper ventilation during the cooking process, Van Patten said.

The explosion did not appear to cause any damage. Deputies arrested Corley on suspicion of manufacturing hash oil and possession of drug paraphernalia. Corley was taken to Mendocino County Jail where he was to be held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
