Windsor irrigation line spills 660,000 gallons of treated water

A ruptured irrigation line near Windsor spilled an estimated 660,000 gallons of treated water into a creek that feeds the Russian River, state officials reported Friday.

The leak was reported in the area of Trenton-Healdsburg Road southwest of Windsor near Riverfront Regional Park. It does not appear to have resulted in any environmental damage, said Eric Laughlin, a spokesman for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Laughlin said the ruptured line was discovered at 12:30 a.m. Friday and turned off 30 minutes later.

The town of Windsor's Public Works Department reported the leak to state officials later that morning.

The leak sent water flowing into a drainage ditch, and from there, into Mark West Creek, four miles upstream of the Russian River, Laughlin said.

"It probably took a couple of days to figure out it was broken," he said.

He said the water was not chlorinated or treated with chemicals.

"It's just reclaimed water," he said.
