A Fort Bragg woman who initially claimed she'd stabbed herself in the back now says her girlfriend attacked her, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.
The suspect, Ugwunwa Ogwogwo, 43, is being held in the Mendocino County jail on suspicion of attempted murder and felony domestic battery, sheriff's officials said.
The stabbing was reported early Thursday morning after the woman arrived at the Mendocino Coast District Hospital for treatment, officials said. She reportedly told responding deputies that the wounds to her back and hand were self inflicted. She said she was home alone at the time.
Deputies went to her home, where they contacted Ogwogwo, who lives with the victim. She told them she was not staying in the main residence at the time of the stabbing and she did not know what happened, sheriff's officials said.
On Sunday, the injured woman contacted deputies and changed her account. She said Ogwogwo began arguing about their dating relationship and making accusations, sheriff's officials said.
Police said the argument culminated with Ogwogwo stabbing the woman several times with a kitchen knife, officials said. She then attempted to provide first aid and helped summon an ambulance, sheriff's officials said.
