Oaks vs. autos
EDITOR: It was disturbing to read in The Press Democrat of the destruction of mature oaks in Windsor for turn lanes into the new Oliver's Market ("Windsor oak removal fight," Tuesday). Here we have in a microcosm an example of a much larger wrongheaded public policy that places the needs of the automobile above those of the environment.
In an era of disastrous climate change we should be preserving mature trees that sequester the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, and we should be limiting the habitat of automobiles and trucks that produce one third of all California's greenhouse gases.
One would think that our drought would raise the collective consciousness regarding climate change.
