More rain on its way to Sonoma County

Sonoma County is set to get 1/3- to 1/2-inch of rain Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain is already falling in Ukiah and will make its way to Santa Rosa late Wednesday morning or early in the afternoon, said Meteorologist Austin Cross. The heaviest rain will fall in the late afternoon or early evening, around commute time, he said. The storm, which is not expected to bring heavy winds, will have cleared out by Thursday morning.

Ukiah could see 3/4-inch of rain during the storm, as could the coastal mountains, Cross said.

Officials welcome any rainfall during this particularly dry year. For the rain year, which runs from July 1 through June 30, just 11.86 inches have fallen at the Sonoma County Airport, Cross said. That's less than half the amount that would fallen by this date on an average year.

There's a good chance that the area will get more precipitation on Saturday and Sunday, Cross said. However, significant rainfall is not expected.
